What is the Uganda Project?
The SSC/OLA Uganda Project is a fund-raising and awareness campaign with the goal of providing support for increased secondary educational opportunities in the Central African country of Uganda. In keeping with the seven basic tenets of Catholic Social Teaching, the SSC/OLA Uganda Project is working to develop solidarity between students and teachers throughout the world. In addition, we believe that all people have the right to educational opportunity and we believe that there are ample resources in the world today to provide access to this basic right. Through a partnership with the Brothers of the Sacred Heart organization known as Project Uplift, students of St. Stanislaus High School and Our Lady Academy are working to help ensure that this right is available to all aspiring students, regardless of nationality, race, class, religion, or gender.

What is “Project Uplift”?
Project Uplift is a non-profit organization located in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, which focuses on providing free secondary educational opportunities for students who do not have the opportunity to attend secondary school. The program currently provides free classes to over 50 students. In addition, Project Uplift provides daily meals to all students, room and board to more than 20 students, and counseling and tuition assistance to graduates who wish to pursue university or technical school training. Currently, classes are held in a one room former chapel building rented from the local parish. Students do not have access to  indoor plumbing, there are very few updated textbooks, and no medicines. The SSC/OLA Uganda Project has committed itself to providing funding for the construction of a block of four new classrooms, a dining room, indoor plumbing, a new student dormitory that will hold fifteen students, as well as the purchase of updated textbooks and school supplies. For this purpose, we have set a goal of raising $50,000 by April, 2010, to aid in the construction and development of the school and its infrastructure.

What have we accomplished thus far?
As of September, 2009, the SSC/OLA Uganda Project has succeeded in raising $26,000 towards this goal, while also providing $13,000 in financial assistance to graduates of Project Uplift for university tuition assistance and $3,200 for financial assistance for Project Uplift.
